Today went to a dialysis centre for carolling with my Young Adult cell group.
Although there was awkward silences when I tried to talk to the people on dialysis, I also knew they appreciated the company. 4 hours per session, 3 times per week, that is their life once they are diagnosed with kidney failure; they might actually die if they skip once.
As we spoke to the patients, one of them tears when they spoke. Although they are from different background, and from different jobs, with different family dynamics, I can see they long for a different life than being on the machine. As we talked, I sense the sole consolation that they have is their family, although they can't work now, they have their family to go back to and support them, but while they are there at the centre, not every family can be there to accompany them for that 4 hours and 3 times a week, that's why I respect my friend who work there, to spend time to talk to them and really get to know them.
It was my first time there. It opened my eyes to see relationships build up, and also hope will carry us forward - one of the guys was saying he would like to go back to his hometown if he stabilises. I can only do this much for them today, perhaps you can touch the lives of those around you today too? I can't forget the hands that were holding so tightly as we went around greeting them...
